Plan in Egypt

Plan has worked in Egypt since 1980 and has been active in a number of districts in the capital Cairo and in slums around the city Alexandria.

Despite a growing economy, Egypt still suffers from widespread poverty. This is characterized by a high infant mortality rate of 59 per 1,000 live births, and the fact that one in four children under the age of five suffers from stunted growth due to poor nutrition. Plan works with nearly 37,000 sponsored children in this North African country in an effort to tackle the causes and effects of this poverty.

A few examples of last year's achievements:

    • 194 teachers participated in training sessions to improve their teaching techniques

    • 470 pregnant women received ante-natal checkups

  • 83 children with disabilities were enrolled in rehabilitation programmes providing therapy sessions for physical and speech difficulties, related medical care, and learning and educational opportunities
