Plan in Kenya
Plan established itself in 1981, in Kenya. Today Plan Kenya is active in the Coast, West Nyanza, Embu, Meru, Kiambu and Taita-Taveta areas.
Last year, crop yields were higher and Kenya continued to recover from the severe drought of 2000. Agriculture, the backbone of the economy, recovered from negative growth of 2.1 per cent in 2000 to a growth of 1.2 per cent. Still, poverty levels rose to 65 per cent of families in rural areas partly because of low prices for Kenya's main exports.
A few examples of last year's achievements:
- 922 teachers attended refresher courses to improve their teaching techniques
- 34 new classrooms were built and 204 dilapidated schools were renovated
- 478 sets of textbooks and 66 sets of desks and equipment were distributed
